{ippity} Christmas in October Blog Hop

Welcome to the {ippity} Christmas in October Blog Hop.

Simple, cute, and fun. That's what I think of when I start creating my Christmas cards each year. I started with the Blitzen line from BoBunny and played with some Smooch spritz and {ippity}'s Season of Joy stamp set. This set has it all - from sentiments to titles to labels to embellishments. Well, see for yourself!

See what I mean? So many possibilities. Here are just 3 of the cards I created using this set (I also made layouts - come back to see those in a few days!):

On the first card, I "Smooched" the white cardstock with Vanilla, then added the Blitzen cut-out. Stamped "Merry Christmas" onto a circle I had inked, then added the Blitzen chipboard and baker's twine. It's difficult to see in the photo, but the Smooch really gives it a pretty shimmer. The second card also uses a stamped circle and Blitzen paper and cut-outs. On the third card, I stamped the oval label in a soft green and "Happy Holidays" in holiday red, cut it out, and mounted it with foam tape. The decorative ornament strip was a cut-out. I made a bunch more cards using this set - I love how simple and fun it is!

Now, onto my projects...

I used the Happy Day line to create my projects. When I first saw the elements in this kit, I couldn't wait to play. Everything is so bright and fun, and makes me want to party! LOL

Since the theme of the hop is Life's Celebrations, I decided to go with some gift-y items. Don't most celebrations include gifts? Yeah...

First up is the gift bag. This is a plain bag I had left over from Christmas. The color went great with the Happy Day line, so I just layered a few pieces together, tied on a bow, and voila! Instant gift bag!

Next up is a treat bag that can be used as a party favor. Just a strip of fun patterned paper, a strip of stickers, and a couple staples.

And last, but not least, a gift card holder. This is actually made from three of the trading-card size cards that I had not yet cut apart. I folded them into a tri-fold and glued one side down, forming a pocket (would be great for putting money or even another gift card into), then made a quick photo corner to hold the gift card in place.

If these projects seem simple, that's because they ARE! The Simple Stories lines have such strong, solid designs that you can do a lot with them without a lot of effort. I did bling it up a little with some Stickles, but even that wasn't necessary. Try it for yourself!

I've got some fun projects to share with you today using Simple Stories' new 100 Days of Summer product line.

First up is a layout based on an Allison Davis sketch focusing on my husband's and my 20th anniversary cruise to Mexico. The bright, fun colors really capture the fun theme of that trip for me.

Next, I created a cute little card. I love layering all the stickers and other elements from this kit!

Finally, I made my version of a "paper bag" album. It's sort of a cheat, because I didn't actually use paper bags. Instead I used a piece of 12" x 24" kraft wrapping paper (like you use for wrapping packages for posting) folded to create a 6" x 6" album with 6 pages and 4 pockets. Super easy, and I think it turned out super cute!

Can you see where I've stitched the open sides and bottoms to create the pockets? I used the Sew Easy tool with the straight stitch head, but actually sewed a blanket stitch. Love this effect!

Great Haul

So this past Friday I went to Shreveport scrap shoppin' for the first time in MONTHS!

I scored some really great stuff and got some really great deals! Here's the breakdown:

Joann's: Got a scallop border punch that I've been wanting for awhile and a scallop circle punch for making paper flowers. Both were on sale for 40% off, so I didn't use a coupon. Found out that I could've gotten 15% off my entire purchase if I'd had my teacher discount card with me (which I DIDN'T! Ugh!), but still, I got out of there for just $20.17!

Hobby Lobby: I've been wanting a second rolling tote ever since Convention, and since I was planning to go to a crop on Saturday, and since they had them marked 40% off, and since I had a $40 gift card from Teacher Appreciation Week, I decided to go for it! Got that and some watercolor crayons (just WAIT till you see how much fun these are!), some more paint brushes, a small flower punch (40% off), Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior dimensional stickers for Adam's high school album (40% off), 2 for 1 orange ruffle ribbon for flower-making, Beacon 3-in-1 glue, precision-tip scissors (40% off), and used my 40% off one regular-priced item to get an American Crafts 3-ring binder for my Disney layouts. I had a little balance left on a birthday gift card, plus the $40 one, so I left with all that loot for just $57.11.

Michael's: Last stop. All I got there were some journaling pens and a bottle of Alene's Tack It Over and Over glue (gonna make my own glue dots, and, hopefully, Glubers - although I'm quite satisfied with duct tape). I found out that they, too, have a Teacher program that will allow me 15% off each and every purchase. Again, I didn't have my ID with me, but I did have a coupon that gave me the same discount, so I checked out at a whopping $8.28.

Being "in the biz," I tend to just buy tools and the like at the big box stores. I have enough paper stash to scrap till the Apocalypse, so I rarely shop for that.

I've already played with most of my new goodies, and can't wait to crack open the others. Coming soon: Watercolor crayon tutorial!

My Scrap Room - revisited

Thought I'd post a quickie tour of my scrap space. I am lucky that this house came with a "front parlor" type room at the front door of the house. It was already painted pink, and I claimed it as mine from the first time we looked at the house. I've overhauled no fewer than three times since we moved in June of 07, and I'm still not 100% happy with it. The main problem I have in here? NO OVERHEAD LIGHTING. That's right - the one room in the house that screams for good lighting, and it has none. Go figure. Still and all, I love having my own little place to get away and create.

My room is divided into three "stations," if you will: My store, my "office," and my creative corner.

Let's start with my creative corner:

Here's my desk. Okay, it's really a card table. Simple, I know, but I have been very productive here. Behind the desk is a cabinet I bought at Home Depot which holds all my photos and negatives (organized Library of Memories style), plus various items I've bought to alter.

These Iris carts hold some of my stamps, my colored pencils, Cricut supplies, embossing tools, brads and fasteners, extra adhesives, and miscellaneous punches and tools.

These racks hold all my papers, cardstock, ribbon, "artsy" supplies (in the brown baskets), punches, embellishments, and MUCH much more. They're made from black wire cubes I found at Target.

The bookshelf is for albums, magazines and idea books, and yes, pages waiting for a home.

Now for my office area - not very exciting, but again, I'm very productive here. In fact, I'm typing this post here! Ha!

I hope you've enjoyed this tour. My studio is not elaborate or fancy, rather it's pretty basic and functional. Still, it's my happy place!

New Year's Resolutions (Scrappy Ones, That Is...)

January's challenge on the MemoryWorks consultant site was to scrapbook your New Year's resolutions. Idea being that if you wrote them down, and further, went so far as to actually make a layout about them, you'd be more likely to keep them.

Now I swore off "life resolutions" years ago, but I do embrace the "One Little Word" concept (see previous post about that). That left me a little at a loss as to completing the challenge. But then I thought, "Y'know, I DO have some scrappy resolutions that I really want to see through in the upcoming year." So I made a page about those. And here it is, without further ado...

Product List: Echo Park Patterned Life Is Good patterned paper, alpha stickers, and element stickers. I created the photo collage in HP Photosmart Essential, then cut the photos apart and adhered them to the patterned paper. Computer journaling is done in Toxica font.

January Class Layouts

I chose Cosmo Cricket's Nutmeg kit for this month's layouts, and I was really surprised that I could get two such different themes out of it.

First up is a nice, Thanksgiving-themed layout. There is room for 4 4x6 photos (or 8 4 x 3's) and one 5x7 portrait-oriented photo.

And the second, a lovely Valentine-themed layout, with room for 4 4x4 photos and 2 4x6 photos. The block with the I <3 U tag on it opens up for a journaling spot or extra photo.

I really love both of these layouts, and can't wait til my 2010 photos arrive so I can add them!

Yesterday was my fortieth birthday, and my husband planned a big surprise party for me. I never suspected a thing! We had a fantastic time, and in the end, I didn't feel so skittish about turning forty.

I have big plans for myself as I enter this new decade of my life - in all areas, including scrapping. They say life begins at forty - I say bring it on!

I had the chance to retreat with a bunch of fun scrappin' friends over the weekend, and, even though I didn't get just TONS done like I normally do (too busy socializing - I haven't laughed that much in a long time - and I needed it!), I did come away feeling rested, refreshed, and inspired.

At last - after a year and a half of procrastinating and working in fits and starts, I have FINALLY gotten all my photos into storage binders ala Stacy Julian's Library of Memories style. I set my mind to finishing this task three days ago, and now, 4 movies later (I find that watching movies distracts me and I'm able to get more done), I am finished!

I used the plain 4x6 photo albums from Wal-mart ($5 apiece), and did find along the way that you get what you pay for. Some of the seams between photos didn't hold up and I found myself having to replace certain pages. I'm storing anywhere from 2-6 pictures in each pocket (front and back), and have my photos in loose chronological order. These storage binders will serve as a sort of catalog of all my pictures that I can flip through and choose ones to scrapbook. Later, I'll begin "triaging" some of them into category drawers. More on that another time. For now, I'm basking in my success...and I'm excited to scrapbook again!

One Little Word

For the past couple of years, I've sort of secretly followed along with Ali Edwards's concept of "One Little Word." Year before last, my word was "purpose." Last year, I chose "possibilities" (although I think "change" chose me - against my will).

This year, I've sort of struggled and cast about, trying to find a word suitable for all the things I want 2011 to be. But I think a word has chosen me, and this time, it's one I can embrace. The word is "blessed," and that is certainly what I want to see manifest in my life in 2011. Not only do I want to realize what my blessings are, but I want to strive to help others feel blessed.

I had originally thought I would choose the word "unleashed," but that seemed a little too wild for me and my personality. I also thought of "new," "remade," and even "hopeful," "joyful," and "successful." All good words, but still, for me, not such a great fit.

Then one of my students gave me an adorable Christmas ornament with the word "Blessed" emblazoned on the front. "Hmm," I thought, "you know, I AM blessed!"

And then my sister gave me yet another, GORGEOUS Christmas ornament (as is our tradition with one another) that also displayed the word "BLESSED." This was particularly meaningful, as she knows very well the struggles I've been through this past year, and her declaration of "Blessed" in the midst of all that was a sort of claiming of triumph in the face of much sadness.

And, finally, just last night, I found myself describing to a very dear friend all the reasons I feel blessed, and that's when the word stuck in my mind as MY word. I'm blessed. I want to let the knowledge of that soak into my bones and let it radiate from me. I am blessed.

Blog Year in Review

I thought it would be fun to take a stroll down memory lane and look back over a year's worth of posts here on the ol' blog. I'm sharing some of my favorites here with you:

January- we learned all about creating cards inside and out, although I can tell you that I still get in a hurry and don't finish the insides most times.

February - ahhh, Make the Cut! I FINALLY took the plunge and bought the software I'd been talking about for over a year. I can honestly say, it has changed the way I scrap AND I use my Cricut much more now than I ever did before. I also decided to become an affiliate for the company, and I've done quite well with that!

March - this was an exciting month to drool over all the new goodies MemoryWorks was getting in the store. I sure bought a lot of new stuff this year - totally worth it!

April - I started to feel guilty about alllllllll my many neglected stamps. I made several projects, but, alas, I never completed the challenge to use each and every stamp. AND I've purchased SO many more this year! Oh well, I can always continue the challenge in 2011.

May - we had a blog hoppin' good time! It was so much fun to create projects for the hop and put together a cute little prize package. I'd definitely like to do more of these in the future.

June - GASC!!! My yearly trek to Arlington, Texas Great American Scrapbook Convention (the closest thing to Mecca for scrapbookers in this part of the country). Had more fun than the law should allow. No, really...they might still be looking for me...

July - BoBunny goodness! There's just something about BoBunny that I've always loved, and I created some of my favorite layouts using it.

August - we got to meet Penny, my little miniature schnauzer. I'm still enjoying the sound of her little feet chasing after me all over the house.

September - sadly, such a busy month that I must not have had time to post. Back to school was an easy transition this year, but again, busy.

October - we raised money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation with our Passionately Pink crop. Never have I been prouder of our sweet group of scrappers!

November - another busy month, apparently. Preparing for the holidays must have had all of my attention, and I did not make time to post.

December - we learned that Santa does, in fact, have a privacy policy and has been enforcing it since there were children. Too funny!

I hope you've enjoyed reminiscing with me. Honestly, 2010 was a challenging year for me on a lot of levels, and I am looking forward to 2011 with hope and excitement for what this new year will hold.

At Santa's Workshop, your privacy is important to us. What follows is an explanation of how we collect and safeguard your personal information; the kind of information we collect; and your choices regarding our use and disclosure of this information.

Why Do We Need This Information?
Santa Claus requires your information in order to compile his annual list of Who is Naughty and Who is Nice, and to ensure accuracy when he checks it twice. Your information is also used in connection with delivering the kinds of goods and services you've come to expect from Santa, including but not limited to toys, games, good cheer, merriment, Christmas spirit, seasonal joy, and holly jollyness.

What Information Do We Collect?
We obtain information from a variety of sources. Much of it comes from unsolicited letters sent to Santa by children all over the world listing specific items they would like to receive for Christmas. Often these letters convey additional information as well, such as the child's hopes and dreams, how much they love Santa, and which of their siblings are doodyheads.

The letters also provide another important piece of information—fingerprints. We run these through databases maintained by the FBI, CIA, NSA, Interpol, MI6, and the Mossad. If we find a match, it goes straight on the Naughty List. We also harvest a saliva sample from the flap of the envelope in which the letter arrives in order to establish a baseline genetic identity for each correspondent. This is used to determine if there might be an inherent predisposition for naughtiness. A detailed handwriting analysis is performed as part of a comprehensive personality workup, and tells us which children are advancing nicely with their cursive and which are still stubbornly forming block letters with crayons long past the age when this is appropriate.

Our network of fully trained, duly deputized mall "Santas" file reports from the field, telling us which children are well-behaved, which are elf-phobic, which are prone to sphincter control issues, and which are squirmy beard-pulling monstrous little brats. Digital copies of photos taken with these "Santas" are automatically sent to our database for further evaluation, with particular attention given to the ones where the children are crying.

Santa also employs a paranormal method of observation known as "remote viewing." This enables him to see you when you're sleeping, know when you're awake, and know if you've been bad or good. He even knows if the cookies you're leaving out are homemade or store-bought.

What Do We Do With the Information We Collect?
Sharing is one of the joys of Christmas. For this reason, we share your personal information with our affiliates, non-affiliated third parties, and anyone else who has a legitimate financial stake in a successful holiday season. Mrs. Claus also likes to have a look-see.

Our affiliates include partners of Santa's Workshop who are actively involved in making Christmas happen. They include toy-making elves, flying reindeer, and Jesus. Non-affiliated third parties might include the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Hanukkah Harry.

We may also share your information with mental health practitioners—especially if, as a child, you asked for a particular present every Christmas but never got it. This information gives your analyst a better understanding of why you sometimes feel sad at this time of year and why you resent your parents.

Occasionally we share your Christmas wish lists with professional lyricists seeking inspiration for a catchy holiday song. In the past this information has inspired such holiday favorites as "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth," "All I Want for Christmas is You," "My Grown-Up Christmas List," and "Santa Baby." Should your wish list inspire a hit single, you may be entitled to royalties, payable in the form of sleighfuls of Christmas cheer.

Finally, we make note of the condition of your roof and chimney in the course of our Christmas Eve deliveries. We share this information with appropriate third-party contractors, who may contact you to warn that your aging roof will soon be leaking worse than Julian Assange, or that you will die in your sleep of carbon monoxide poisoning if you don't replace your chimney liner right away.

How Do We Secure This Information?
We secure your information by keeping it at the North Pole, one of the most remote, inhospitable and uninhabitable places on earth. It is stored in a secure gingerbread facility deep in the Candy Cane Forest, behind an impassable barrier conjured by Elven magic. The facility is guarded by a full brigade of life-size wooden toy soldiers armed with Nerf Blasters and Super Soakers. The area is also patrolled by ravenous polar bears.

You Have Choices
You have "opt out" choices regarding certain disclosures we make about you. Please indicate your preferences below:

Santa's Helpers Workshop Projects

I must admit, I believe this is my favorite class to teach each year. I just love making cute little projects for the express purpose of giving them away and blessing someone else's day! I also love the process of searching magazines, books, and the internet for new and different ideas that we haven't used before. I always come away completely inspired and ready to create.

But I digress...on with the projects!

They are, clockwise from top left: a gift card holder, tea light card/holder, sour cream container, tea bag holder, and hot chocolate holder (inside is a goodie bag stuffed with one or two packets of hot chocolate, mini-marshmallows, and candy canes). None of these are my originals, so I've linked you to the tutorials or instructions for each. However, I didn't find specific instructions for the hot chocolate holder, so here is how I improvised it:

Cut a strip of cardstock 6" x 12"

Along the 12" side, score 3/4" all the way across.

Along the 6" side, score at 3", then at 3 3/4". Turn paper around and score at the same lengths from the other end.

Snip the smallest tabs created by the score lines at the bottom, then fold them inward and fold paper into a box shape. Adhere with a strong glue or tape.

The bags we used to pack them were just simple treat bags from the party or craft section at Wal-Mart.

Now...don't you wish you'd come to class? :)

Long time coming - Class layouts + an announcement!

First, the announcement. I think I mentioned to a couple of my peeps that I was considering trying out for a position on MemoryWorks' creative team, TeamWorks. Well, I did, and...well...I made it! I'm officially a member of the 2011 TeamWorks team, and I couldn't be more excited! I can't wait to see what the upcoming year will bring on that front.

Now, for the long-awaited class layouts from Crop Camp (even I can't believe it's been nigh on TWO months since I've posted!)

These were all created using kraft cardstock, Girls Paperie papers (the Paper Girl line, to be exact) and embellies, with a few Jenni Bowlin Vintage Buttons thrown in for good measure. Oh, and of course we used Perfect Pearls in Lime and Berry Blush (you can now purchase these as a mist here).

What I thought I'd do is talk a little bit about the techniques we used on each layout and share the photo mat sizes, for those of you with completed layouts needing to add pictures.

For this first layout, we used a masking and misting technique. We used a plastic mask (no need to buy these if you have a Cricut - just create your own out of stencil blank) and Perfect Pearls to mist the background on the lefthand side of the layout, then flipped the mask over to "stamp" the right hand side. Photo mat sizes: Left-hand side: 6"x8"; Right-hand side: 3) 3.5" x 3.5"

For this next layout, we antiqued the edges of all the pieces with Distress Inks, then pieced together the entire page background out of squares of patterned paper. Photo mat sizes: All are 4" x 6."

For this layout, we used a Q-tip dipped in water and a stamp inked with embossing ink to brush on Perfect Pearls as accents. (See the darker petals of the rose and the stamped image) Photo mat sizes: Left-hand side: 4" x 6" and 5" x 7"; Right-hand side: 2) 4" x 6"

For this last layout, we focused on curling the edges of the patterned paper using water and also clustering embellishments together above and below the photos. Photo mat sizes: All are 6" x 4."

Passionately Pink - We Did It!

Now that October almost officially over (just a few hours left now), I can announce the results of our efforts to raise money for the SGK Foundation this month and last. I am so pleased and proud to say that we not only met our goal to raise $500 collectively, but we also went over by $7! Way to go, everyone who gave! Your generosity touches me and blesses me. And, since we cut out the "middle man" this year, you can be assured that every dollar has gone directly to fund breast cancer research. What an awesome way to honor our fallen sisters as well as the many breast cancer survivors we know and love. Again, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Christmas Planner Class

Passionately Pink for the Cure

I am so excited about this year's charity crop to benefit breast cancer research. This year, we will be working directly with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, rather than working under the umbrella of Scrapbooks Etc. magazine (as in years past). This is awesome, because SGK has hooked us up with a special team blog (we are the Passionately Pink Papercrafters - how d'ya like that?) as well as some other helps along the way. It's going to be great! I've set us a team goal of raising $500, and I know that with everyone working together, we can meet or beat this goal!

Okay, so, details for the crop:
It will be held Saturday, September 11, from 9 am to 5 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Homer Road in Minden. The fee is $25, and this includes a donation to SGK, snacks, drinks, and lunch. To register online, simply fill out the form below. Be sure to indicate whether you will be paying by check or PayPal. You will need to register by September 1, so that I can get an accurate headcount.

If you won't be able to attend, you can still help out by donating on our team page. I also encourage you to ask friends and family to donate as well - the more the merrier! This was one of those fun, experimental, try-out-all-your-cool-toys and techniques kind of project. It's paint, it's decoupage, it's making paper flowers, it's hand stitching, it's inking - it's heaven! Sooo much fun to make, and functional, too! I could see using the title "Memories" instead of "Recipes" and showing off favorite photos, or even a "To-Do" for a teacher's desk. The possibilities are endless.

Oh my! It's been nearly a month since my last post! Gosh, where to start? July was such a busy month, what with our vacation in Tennessee, and then our family get-together at Toledo Bend. But what's really been keeping me busy since that time is the precious little one you see in the picture. Her name is Penny, and she is the newest member of our family. Isn't she a-doggone-dorable? I had forgotten how much I love the pitter patter of little critter feet following me around. I guess I had also forgotten how destructive these little ones can be (she's discovered paper - I hope my considerable stash can survive!)...but all in all, she's a heart-stealer. Look for a "Puppy Love" layout coming soon! :)

It's All Relative

This layout is one of my new favorites. Not so much because I think it's terrifically artistic or genius on my part, but because it shows off some of my new favorite photos, favorite memories. These pics were taken at my family's Easter Sunday get-together. They depict one of our typical times together lately, relaxing and enjoying each other. In fact, I'm looking forward to another such time in a just a few weeks, with my siblings and their kids. Can't wait!

Flower Child

Simply put, I love BoBunny. Love their papers, love their stickers, love their embellishments, love their blog, love them.

So when I finally got my hands on the Flower Child line, I instantly wanted to play. Here are a couple of layouts I made using this fun stuff.

This first layout shows off one of my favorite pictures - My sweet niece Sophie on Easter Sunday. Precious!

And the second layout shows off a photo of me and two of my nieces as we prepared for the Parkinson's 5K walk in April. Here we are, all poised to run - we collectively finished last. But we had such a blast together!

Both layouts are based on sketches, one from PageMaps' May edition, and the other from Nic Howard's Dimensional Details class. Both - fun to work with.

So let's get to it. I've got a mini-tutorial to share with you for making a Christmas organizer/planner. The original concept for this planner uses a manila folder, but, lacking a new one of these, I chose to use two sheets of kraft cardstock. I scored them at 4" horizontally all the way across the pages, then at 4" vertically once. Fold the bottom score line up to form a pocket at the bottom of each page, then fold accordian-style across the width of the two pages. (See photo below). You will need to cut off one 4" section of one of the sheets of cardstock, then overlap the two pages so that you have 4 panels, then glue in place. Decorate using any patterned papers and embellishments that you like. I used MemoryWorks' December Express Kit to create mine. The kit included everything I needed to make this super-gorgeous, super-blingy planner.

June Class Layouts

I used Basic Grey's Kioshi line to create these layouts. The first is my take on a Becky Fleck class I took at GASC earlier this month. The flowers were created from white tissue paper and Glimmer Misted.

The second layout is also a Becky Fleck layout -from June's PageMaps. I cut out the butterflies out of white cardstock on my Cricut using Make the Cut software, then ran them through the Texture Boutique, then finally, Glimmer Misted them.

We had a great time creating these beautiful layouts. You can order supplies to make your own by contacting me (I am placing a group order on Wednesday of this week). GASC Report

Oh my! I'm just back from two wonderful days at GASC (Great American Scrapbook Convention) in Arlington, Texas, and did I have the time of my life!

Some highlights:

Took two fabulous classes with one of my scrapbooking heroes, Becky Fleck! THE author of PageMaps, and soon-to-be released PageMaps 2, as well as the creative genius behind the PageMaps website. I tell ya, I don't know how this lady manages to crank out all those maps on a monthly basis AND manage 1200 head of cattle on her ranch in Montana. The classes were absolutely to die for, and I found her delightful as an instructor.

Hit the showroom floor for some serious SHOPPING. Have you ever seen so much scrappy goodness all in one room? We're talking wall to wall. I scored some good stuff at great prices - some of which will be showing up at some future events. Nope, can't tell ya...you'll just have to wait and find out!

Got to see T!m Holtz in action. Mind you, I wanted to pull up a chair and chat with him about life and such, but the man was BUSY! I'm not sure if he took any breaks at all throughout the entire show. Great guy, with a true artist's heart.

Ate convention food favorites - a burrito one night and baked potato the next. YUMMY!

Entered a dance contest at the crop with my bff. We wowed the crowd with our funky moves, such as The Bump, The Twist, The Swim, The YMCA, and The Robot. We even surprised them with an impromptu Conga line. We handily took second place.

Then it was time to pack up and head home, to pine away for next year's convention. Till then...Adios, Texas!

So, let's get hoppin', shall we? Today I've got a quick, easy, fun, and INEXPENSIVE tutorial for you.

This summer calendar was created using 2 sheets of BoBunny's Paradise cut-outs and 1 sheet of combo stickers. How simple is that?

Begin by cutting apart the four squares on one side of the cut-out sheet. These will serve as your facing pages.

Choose one of the four squares as your cover and add your title using the combo stickers. Glue your June page to the back side of this cover.

I stamped my calendar pages, but only because I'm challenging myself to use every stamp set I own (a daunting challenge, to be sure! LOL), but you could just as easily print your calendar pages using your computer. The pages should be 6" x 6". Embellish each of your facing pages as you wish and glue them to the backs of the calendar pages. I also glued the "Bucketful of Memories" square from the cut-out page to the back of the last calendar page to create a back cover.

ETA: Someone asked about the stamp I used for the calendar. It's called Calendar Grid, and it's made by Hampton Art.

Punch holes and bind with ribbons, binder rings, or both. Voila! Add pictures throughout the summer, and you'll have a cute keepsake and a handy place to jot down the dates of all those ball games, swimming lessons, and most importantly (at least for me) - VACATION!!!

If you're following the hop, you've just clicked over from Connie's blog. Doesn't she do such beautiful work? I have been in awe of her talent for some time now, and am a big admirer of hers. I expect we'll begin to see her name in lots of publications in the very near future.

And if you just wandered in, well, welcome to the hop! Here's your chance to get some great inspiration, and maybe even to win some new scrappy goodies!

Now, what do I have in store for you today? This is a project I saw in the June issue of Scrapbooks, Etc., and knew immediately that I wanted to adapt it to our Spring into Summer theme. In my family, there are weddings, graduations, dance recitals, and all sorts of other fun things happening this time of year. It's always a good idea to have a few nifty gift card holders on hand for those times when such an invitation appears in the mail.

This gift card holder can actually be designed to hold up to six gift cards and/or tags, letters, messages, etc. I chose to make it with two pockets for two different gift cards. The first version is a wedding-themed one, and I think it turned out so delicate and pretty! It uses the Road Show line from Fancy Pants. So flirty, feminine, and fun!

This is that same little Make the Cut butterfly I used this card project a few days ago. I ran it through my Texture Boutique, then tied some ric rac with twine and topped with a button. Download the SVG here: Butterfly

Here's the back. There's room for a personal written message, a stamped sentiment, or even some photos:

The second is a graduation version of the same concept. It uses the Mama-razzi line from BoBunny.

Front. The quote on the front is actually a cut-out from the Mama-razzi goodies.

And back. The graduation cap is a Make the Cut file. Download the SVG here: Grad Hat. The quotes are just some I printed onto white cardstock, then inked with Distress Inks to give that aged feel.

So, the details:
First, cut your base cardstock into a 4" x 9" strip. Accordian fold at 3" and 6." Use patterned paper to create the pockets, cutting it to 2 1/2" x 3." Glue along three sides, leaving the top open for your gift card to slip into. Decorate with border punches, ribbon, or strips of coordinating patterned paper. Embellish and enjoy!

Stamped Project #11 and a Giveway!

Remember that stamped, layered flower I posted the other day? Yep, that's the same one you see on this card. I decided to add a pin back to it and attached it to this Mother's Day card (a spinoff of an idea I saw in the June Scrapbooks, Etc.). This is also another project in which I was able to incorporate three of my stamp sets - I am rockin' and rollin'! My goal for the weekend: figure out just how many stamp sets I actually have to get through, and how many I've already worked with. I am so enjoying this process!

10 Things I've Learned

Well, so far I've completed a total of ten projects, and my stamps have never felt more loved. I thought I'd pause here to share the top ten things I've learned since I began this challenge:

1. You get what you pay for, especially where stamps are concerned. My $1 stamps, adorable as they may appear, do not stamp nearly so well nor cling nearly so well as my higher-quality stamp sets.
2. I *LOVE* Distress Inks. I want some in every color!
3. You really can create a complete project with just paper, stamps, ink, and glue. And it can be absolutely lovely.
4. Inky fingers are a sign of a content spirit.
5. You can teach an old dog new tricks. I've seen and tried out some new tips and techniques, and have loved every moment of the process. I want to keep exploring and learning more!
6. It's okay to scraplift (or cardlift, or whatever the case might be). As long as you give credit where credit is due, it's okay to NOT reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to stamp or scrap.
7. Speaking of scraplifting, there is some gorgeous work to be found on the good ol' world wide web! Check out Splitcoast Stampers especially for phenomenal artwork and tutorials.
8. The more stamps I use, the more I want. Human nature, I guess, but my stash is already out of control, so adding to it means I will have to continually find space for new goodies!
9. No matter how hard I try, I cannot keep up with every letter in a teeny, tiny alphabet stamp set. I will always be missing an "e" or an "o" or some such equally important letter.
10. Now that I've begun this challenge, I want to remember how much fun it is to create every day. I never want my stamps to feel neglected again.

So that's all the wisdom I have to impart for now. Back tonight with Project #11.

Stamped Project #10

Another card lift from the January/February PaperCrafts. I used Make the Cut to do the bracket shape and butterflies - have I mentioned that I *love* this software? I can make anything I want, any time I want, with or without a cartridge. It's the best of both worlds!

I love how this card turned out...I'm thinking of making a batch of them for next month's card swap.

Stamped Project #8

Someone shared the tutorial for making this flower over on the old AC Bailey message board, and I had to try it! (By the way - the board is still going, and we'd love to have more people join us, so click on over and start gabbing any time!)

So I decided to use a stamped flower image instead of my scalloped circle, and I am loving the results! Not sure yet what I'll use the flower on, but I'll be sure to post when I do.

Stamped Project #7

Here's another Dimensional Details class assignment. I'm finding it so much easier to create cards instead of layouts for this class. I think it's because all my photos are STILL in such disarray, the thought of digging through to find the perfect one for a layout is overwhelming. With cards, I can just choose a sentiment and put it in place of the photo.

The lesson for this was creating your own backgrounds. We stacked strips of patterned paper, then practiced masking. It's really hard to see in the photo, but I cut out a leaf shape with the Cricut and laid it in the lower left corner of the card front, then sprayed over it with Perfect Pearls mixed with water. It's very subtle, and the color is fairly close to that in the patterned papers, so it doesn't show up very well. Again, it's not perfect, but I'm learning as I go, and will play with this technique some more. I'll get it right at some point.

Stamped Project #6

This is a lift of a card on the cover of the January/February PaperCrafts magazine. I loved the simplicity of it, and wanted to make my own version, with colors I love to play with - I always seem drawn to green and blue.

This is another project that uses THREE of my stamp sets - go me! I'm starting to feel on a roll now! I picked up a Stampendous background stamp set not long ago at Hobby Lobby, with all kinds of grand ideas in mind, but this is the first project I've ever actually USED one of them on. You can see the white design on the kraft background. The other is the white flourish - that's a CTMH set I've had for quite some while. And, of course, the greeting. I will say, that American Crafts set has seen quite a bit of use, both for my personal projects and for some class projects as well. I love the designs, just wish the stamps were "clingier."

At any rate, I love how this card came out. I'm actually thinking of making a whole set of them.

Stamped Project #5

Woohoo! This project actually used THREE of my stamp sets! This was a bonus project from Week 2 of Dimensional Details, in which we learned this stamp and resist technique. First, I stamped the flourish onto the tag with white acrylic paint. After it dried, I sponged on some blue and yellow distress inks. Next, I added the three little stamped designs over on the right. Finally, I cut a smaller rectangle to stamp my sentiment onto, followed the same procedure for inking it, and added the sentiment. Now my fingers are inky, and my soul is satisfied. I can't stop staring at it - I think it's lovely!

Stamped Project #4a

Although this is technically my fifth project this week, I can't officially call it that, because I didn't use a stamp from a new stamp set. I sort of got enamored with my new Love in Return set, and I really wanted to use this one for my card swap cards. (I attend a monthly card swap hosted by Michelle Cline - so fun!)

This could have easily been a "one sheet wonder" or "sheetload" type of card. The blue background pieces is 3 x 4, so you can get 12 out of a 12 x 12 sheet of paper. The patterned paper strips are 3 1/4 x 3/4, so you could easily get them from one sheet of double-sided paper, and by using both patterns could duplicate this look. I made 12 of them in about 30 minutes, and I'm all set for tomorrow night's swap!

Stamped Project #4

I got a new stamp set today! And I've got more on order... (Kinda makes my whole "use each of the stamps sets you own" project seem a little like shoveling snow in a blizzard, I know!) It's the {ippity} Love in Return stamp set (I've just signed up to be an {ippity} chick, and I'm so excited!), and I just love it! I will be able to get a good variety of projects from it, which to me is the mark of a really good set.

For this project, I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone and complete another of my Dimensional Details class assignments. This is the Week 1 assignment, which deals with a paper curling technique. See the edges of the background paper and the circle? They were treated with this technique. Basically, you wet the edges really well with water and then, while they're wet, you manipulate them with your fingers to get this nice curled effect. Then ink with distress inks, and you've got a great, dimensional look.

I love the look of the BoBunny Mamarazzi papers for this card - the muted colors really work well together to set the tone for the message of the card, would you agree?

I am so excited to announce the details of the St. Jude Charity Crop. The crop will be held on Saturday, May 22, from 9 am to 5 pm, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Minden. The crop fee is $20. Included in this fee are snacks, lunch, a goody bag, and a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. There will be raffles and silent auctions to raise additional fund for St. Jude. Registration is open, and all registrations will need to be prepaid.

We welcome additional donations of items for the raffle and/or silent auction. Any monetary donations given over and above the crop fee will go directly to St. Jude.

Stamped Project #3

This is almost a direct scraplift of a card I saw and loved in the new CTMH idea book. The stamp set, however, is just one I picked up a while ago from Oriental Trading. It's simple, but cute, I think. It could work for a boy's birthday card (they're so hard to find cards for!)

Stamped Project #2

This layout is actually a class assignment for Dimensional Details, the latest class I'm taking at Big Picture Scrapbooking. (I must say, I'm getting rather addicted to these classes!)

This would be the pre-class assignment. Yes, that's right, the pre-class assignment. Despite the fact that the rest of the class will move onto Week 4 on Thursday. I am NOT in the accelerated group. Obviously.

The assignment was to pledge to ourselves to have fun with the class and to experiment and play - basically to accept that there are no rules to scrapbooking. I'm all about that! (Notice the printed background - it was actually a digital download that came with the class specifically for this assignment. Cool, huh?)

Can you see the stamped part? Maybe not...the photo is not that great, and...well, honestly, my stamping technique was not that great. But I'm learning, right? I actually used a CTMH background stamp to add a little something to the title letters, "play." See it now?

The title itself was cut with my Cricut using Make the Cut software. The font is Book Antiqua, and the cut is actually the shadow of the letters. The green vine was a free SVG file I found and thought it would be absolutely perfect for this page.

Supplies used: Bazzill cardstock, Barkley, patterned papers from Three Bugs in a Rug's Simple Pleasures line, flowers are Prima Sprites. Green vine cardstock and buttons from my stash. Stamp set: Spot On Backgrounds, Close to My Heart

Stamped Project #1

I created this as a logo for a very exciting event that you'll be hearing lots more about very soon. The stamp set is one of the Studio G $1 alphabet sets. I made the tent, scissors, and frame using my Cricut and Make the Cut software. The tent pattern was a coloring book page that the software converted to a cut file. Same thing with the frame - how cool is that? The moon was created by punching a circle out of cream colored cardstock, then punching it again with the same circle punch to create the crescent shape.

Supplies used: Bazzill cardstock-Starmist, Patterned paper, kraft cardstock, blue cardstock, cream cardstock, gold cardstock, and dark green cardstock all from my stash. Zing silver glitter embossing powder (on scissors), Studio G stamps, Make the Cut software.

I can remember when I first engaged in this scrapbooking hobby, I was very worried about the expense. At the time, I was a stay-at-home mom and watched all our pennies very carefully. I remember making myself the promise that I would never cross over to "the dark side," into rubber stamping. Because I KNEW that if I did, I would become addicted and the temptation to spend our hard-earned dollars would be even greater.

I got involved in attending monthly workshops provided by Tammi Mixon, who is a consultant for Close to My Heart. I told her the same thing, "Oh, I don't intend to get into stamping..." She just wisely nodded and said, "I understand."

Well, here I am, about 10 years into this, and my stamp collection is, in my estimation, enormous (although, I *have* seen bigger...much bigger)! Each of my stamp sets was bought with a specific project in mind. Well, except for the $1 stamp sets. Let's face it, those I bought because...well...they were $1!

And since many of those well-intended projects have never seen the light of day, and since most of my stamp sets have never even been inked, I've decided to do a little challenge with myself. For the next - however many days/weeks/months it takes - I am going to use at least one stamp from each of my stamp sets. Yes, even the football one. And the Disney one.

My goal is to create 5 new projects per week: tags, cards, altered items, and/or scrapbook pages, take a picture of each one, and post it to the blog. Who knows? Perhaps I'll even include a few tutorials along the way!

So, what's in your stash that you'd love to see getting used? Perhaps it's patterned paper, or better yet, patterned paper SCRAPS. Maybe you're in the same boat as me, and you've got tons of stamps just begging to be inked. Whatever it is, feel free to join me in the challenge to use what you've got, be creative, and get some projects done!

Six Picks

Eeek! The new MemoryWorks catalog arrived this week, and it is absolutely full of scrappy goodness! I wanted to share with you a few of my favorites. I'll be placing an order for some of these very soon, and I hope to have projects to share with you soon after that. So, without further ado, here they are in no particular order:

American Crafts Cardstock. It's textured, it's color-coordinated, and it's CHEAP. At 34 cents per sheet, these variety packs are a great deal. (Also comes in single-color packs!)

7 Gypsies Chipboard Alphas & Numbers. These chipboard stickers give added dimension and character to a scrapbook page or card. Can't wait to get my hands on some! Of course there are matching papers, stickers, etc....

Pink Paislee Bayberry Cottage. This collection just calls my name. I love the color combinations and the vintage, distressed look. I have visions of gorgeous pages and cards coming from these papers. Again, there are matching stickers and other amazing accessories to be had as well.

Fancy Pants Road Show. Again, the colors and vintage feel of this collection really gets my mojo flowing. These glitter cuts are to die for and would add that perfect "something" to a papercrafting project. The brads, buttons, and papers are great, too!

Card Kits. Card lovers, unite! We have more new card kits than you can shake a stick at! We've got Basic Grey card kits for all the new lines: Green at Heart, Kioshi, Capella, and Max & Whiskers. We've also got all the Fancy Pants lines in card kits: Road Show, About a Girl, My Family, and Rusted Sun. A big ol' slice of card heaven!

BoBunny Mamarazzi. I've been eyeing this line ever since the sneak peeks came out for CHA. I think this line is so versatile in that you can use it for heritage photos, pages about your scrapbooking hobby, or actual pages about stalking your kids with the camera! LOL It's a great-looking line with a lot of possibilities.

So those are the top six items on my wish list - for now. I'll probably have a whole new six picks this time next week! :)

I've been looking forward to today for months now, ever since my sister (Ne'Ne') suggested we do a family banquet and talent show. After many hours of planning and preparing, the day has finally arrived! I can't wait to see what talents my family will put on display today - and I will be ready with the camera to catch it all.

Here are a couple projects my niece and I made for table decorations for the banquet. I used my Cricut and Make The Cut software to create them both.

Card Class and News!

Okay, so I finally got photos to post of tomorrow's card class. I thought it would be so genius to get pictures of these Valentine's themed cards against a background of snow, and I was in such a hurry to do so I managed to forget one of the cards! So if you're coming to the class, you'll actually be making TEN cards, not just the nine shown here. LOL

Speaking of snow - the boys and I have had the BEST time out in it! They crack me up - a little white powder turns my two big teenagers into toddlers again. They kept "building forts" and "stocking ammunition" for their "enemies." Like I said - they crack me up. And I struck photo GOLD with some of their antics. More on that later.

Onto my NEWS!!! I was so excited, thrilled, honored, and grateful to find out this morning that I was chosen runner up in Reminisce's Passports contest. You can see my entry and the post announcing the winners here: Reminisce: The Winners of the Passport Contest Are.... So exciting - it's the first contest I've entered, and I used supplies I won from Tami Sanders's blog.

Busy, busy

Wow - it's past time to update the blog!

I wish I had a new project to post, but alas, at this point, well...I don't. I've been working on an "fantasy vacation" album for a contest hosted by Reminisce, and am having a blast with that. But there are only so many hours in a day, so I haven't had time to work on much else.

As anticipated, I am dreadfully behind on my Design Your Life class, but the content isn't going anywhere, and I keep fantasizing that I'll get ahold of a magical chunk of time in which to "catch up." Maybe President's Day?

I'm also working on the cards for next week's card class using Pink Paislee's adorable Cupid line. I am so looking forward to this class - it promises to be a lot of fun!

Sad news this week...AC Bailey Designs is closing its doors. As of Tuesday, I am no longer an Independent Consultant with this great company that I have loved so much. However, all is not lost - ACB is being resurrected as The Scrapbook Supply Store, which is going to be structured as a buying club for scrapbooking business people, and will still be an online store for customers. I'm sure I'll still be involved in some capacity, and I wish Erica, the owner, nothing but the very best.

That said, I am exploring some ideas about what direction I would like for my business to take, so stay tuned for more on that.

Some Cards

I follow Cath Edvalson's Moxie Fab blog, and on it, she did a whole week of posts about finishing your cards from the inside out. So, intrigued by that, I started playing around. Here's what I came up with.

This is a regular, A2 sized card with a space on the inside to write or stamp your sentiment.

This one is also standard-sized.

This little gem is 4 x 4 - perfect size for attaching to a gift.

And this last one is just cute. No, I didn't finish the inside, because the card base is already white, but I think it turned out great just the same. It's also 4 x 4.

Some More Design Your Life Class Layouts

Okay, so last time I posted, we were heading into Week 2, and I had just finished Week 1. Well, guess what? We're now headed into Week 4!!!, and I've only finished one assignment for Week 2. Yeah, I'm laggin' a little. I do have my pics printed for the rest of Week 2's assignments, and hope to make some headway on Week 3 this weekend, although I've got some pretty big plans that might deter me. I'm really looking forward to next weekend's crop - I've got high hopes of actually catching up then!

Design Your Life Class Layouts

Did I tell you? I'm taking an online scrapbooking class! It's called Design Your Life, and it's taught by the one and only, Cathy Zielske the Great. If you've never heard of her, she's the really hip chick who made Simple Scrapbooks the awesome magazine it was (IMHO). You can check out her blog here. I just think she's amazing, and I feel very blessed to be able to take this class with her over at Big Picture Scrapbooking. It's the last time she's offering it, so I feel doubly lucky.

At any rate, the class is in Week 2, and in true "Last-Minute Lisa" form, I am just finishing Week 1. Week 3 will be posted on Thursday, right about the time I'll start Week 2. Unless I get caught up. Which, let's face it...would be nothing short of a miracle. (*cough*cough*procrastinator*cough*)

So, here are a couple of those layouts. I have two more, which I'll try to post tomorrow...just have to get them photographed.

The first is the pre-work assignment. LOVE how this one came out!

The second is assignment one. I goofed on the photo sizes somehow, and it's bugging me, but overall, I like the design.

I'm so excited about this class - my hope is that it will make me a better scrapbook designer, and by default, a better scrapbook instructor. Can't wait to see what's next!

2010 Crop Schedule

I'm making a few minor changes to my class/crop schedule for the new year.

Instead of offering monthly papercrafting classes, I'll be offering one every other month, beginning in February.

Also, instead of holding our layout class and crop on the third Saturday of every month, I'll be holding it on the LAST Saturday of every month.

I hope you find this new schedule convenient, and most of all, I hope to see you at many of these fun events!

A card and a layout

Hi all! It's been awhile since I updated here, so I thought I'd share my two latest projects. Only two, because November and December have been very busy months for me (as for you, I'm sure).

The first is a layout I did about our Christmas vacation at Disney World in 2006. We had told the boys that the trip was their gift. They knew they'd receive stockings, but were totally surprised when they had actual gifts to open up on Christmas morning.

The next is a simple card I did. It's very easy to assemble: Just cut a strip of cardstock 4" x 12." Use your Top Score Scoreboard to score it into a trifold, then trim from each fold to the outer corner, creating the triangular flaps. Cut your patterned papers to fit, adhere, and embellish. I will be using mine to tuck a gift card into, so I kept it simple, but these cards are gorgeous all done up.

Both projects use Bazzill cardstock and the December Details paper set from AC Bailey.

Now on to the tutorial...

I've been a busy little elf getting my house ready for Thanksgiving. I like to keep the decorating for this holiday simple, because the minute the last guest leaves, hubby and I are outside hanging Christmas lights, and I start really decking the halls!

But I wanted my table to be pretty for this Thanksgiving, so this is what I came up with:

I made all the decorations you see here - the napkin ring/place cards, the Thanksgiving menu luminaries, the flower centerpiece, and the decorated candles.

Today I'm going to show you how to make the candle decoration. You can adapt this technique for any occasion, and it's super easy to do!

All you'll need are:
Pillar candles (as many as you'd like to decorate)
Patterned paper (I used Kaisercraft Pennyroyale)
Packing tape
Hot water in a large bowl
Paper towels
Adhesive
Heat embossing gun
Ribbon or ricrac for embellishing

Follow these easy steps:
Step 1: Run a strip of packing tape the entire 12" width of your patterned paper, smoothing the tape as you roll it.

Step 2: Cut this strip of tape and patterned paper. It doesn't matter if you cut it precisely, but don't cut into the tape.

Step 3: Soak this strip of tape and paper in hot water for about 30 minutes.

Step 4: With your thumb, rub the wet patterned paper off the entire length of the tape strip. Your goal is to have no white paper fibers showing when done.

Step 5: Allow tape strip to dry on paper towels - should take about 1 to 2 hours.

Step 6: Wrap tape strip around pillar candle. Secure with a small amount of adhesive.

Step 7: Heat tape strip with heat embossing gun. You will be able to see the tape "melt" into the candle beneath the surface. Keep the heat gun moving so as not to cause the candle to drip.

Step 8: Embellish with ribbon or ricrac, and enjoy! (Caution: remove ribbon when burning candle)
